PREFACE

During the past three or perhaps four decades, the pure Màgadhi, otherwise called Páli, has become a subject of special study among the students of Science and Philosophy in all the civilized countries of the world. In respect of its literature and its teachings, the Páli language stands pre-eminently the first in importance of all the Oriental languages. Our Lord Buddha preached his religious truths in Páli. It is impossible, within our limited space, to describe fully the various advantages one may acquire by the study of the Sacred Buddhist literature. Those who desire to derive benefit by studying the Buddhist Scriptures should in the first place acquire a sound knowledge of the Mágadhi language.

In the present day there are many Magazines and Journals published in Sinhalese and other languages current in the Island. A Pali Magazine, considering the large number of students who diligently apply themselves to the study of that language, has been a long-felt want, which this our effort we hope, will, in a large measure, supply and also we hope that, with the material help and support of our friends and well-wishers, we shall ere long be able to present this Magazine to the world in a more perfect form.

The Magazine will be chiefly devoted to the Buddhist Scriptures, History, Páli Literature and grammar: and news about Societies, Functions, &c, will also be published if they are sent to us in Pali.

We are glad to be able to mention here that several eminent Páli Scholars in Ceylon have promised to contribute to the Magazine.

The Editor, REV. W. DHAMMANANDA, BHIKKHU., 15th Wesak May 2455/1911, Sunandaramaya, Ambalangoda, CEYLON.
