PREFACE
It was in Ceylon that the word of the Buddha, which for several centuries had been handed down orally, was transmitted to writing in the 1st century B. C. This is a matter of great pride to the people of Ceylon and a source of blessing to them. The teachings of the Buddha so set down in writing are contained in sacred texts collectively known as the Tipiṭaka.
These sacred texts, while being preserved in their pristine purity in Ceylon, later found their way to other countries through the efforts of Dhammadūtas or Buddhist “missionaries,” who used them to make known the teaching of the Buddha in those lands. The language of these texts is known as Pāḷi. Pāḷi has no script of its own, and, as a result, wherever the Tipiṭaka was written down, this was done in the script of the country where the writing took place. Thus, in Europe the Roman script has been used, in Burma the Burmese, in India the Nāgarī script, while in Thailand and Cambodia the characters belong to the old Khmer script. Editions of the Tipiṭaka published in these several countries in their respective scripts are available to those who need them.
It has to be admitted, though regretfully, that editions of the Tipiṭaka in Sinhala script - that being the script of the country - are hard to obtain in Ceylon, in spite of the fact that Ceylon is the acknowledged centre of Theravāda Buddhism. There have been published, it is true, from time to time in this country editions of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, wholly or in part. But, these publications have been sporadic and not sustained.
The Tipiṭaka Trust of the All-Ceylon Buddhist Congress has decided to supply this deficiency and publish an uniform edition of the entire Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Sinhala script. The Trust has already published several volumes of a series in which the Pāḷi text and its Sinhala translation appear side by side. With this new venture, the Trust will issue three separate sets of publications: (1) the Pāḷi text and Sinhala translation side by side in the same volume, (2) the Pāḷi text in Sinhala script, and (3) the Sinhala translation by itself. The volumes will be published as and when they are ready for publication. A serial number will be assigned to each volume, depending on its place in the whole series.
The present text, the Itivuttaka of the Khuddaka Nikāya, is being published immediately to begin the series, since a beginning has to be made somewhere. The Itivuttaka is a small text and, therefore, only a little time was needed to get it ready for publication.
The Trust is grateful to the Ven. Labuhengoda Chandaratana Thero for editing the text and to Mr. W. D. J. Ratnayake of the Anula Press for having printed the volume expeditiously.

INTRODUCTION
According to tradition, at the first Council of the Elders held at Rājagaha, soon after the Buddha’s Parinibbāna, when the teachings of the Buddha were rehearsed, they were compiled into nine sections known as the navanga-satthu-sāsana. In this division, certain discourses were included in a category called Itivuttaka.
According to the Commentaries, the suttas so categorised have a special feature not to be found in other suttas. Every sutta, included in the Itivuttaka, begins with the sentence: Vuttam hetam Bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutam (This has been spoken by the Blessed One; it has been spoken by the Perfect One - thus it has been heard by me) and at the conclusion of each sutta is found the sentence: ayampi attho vutto Bhagavatā iti me sutam (This matter too has been declared by the Blessed One - thus it has been heard by me). At a subsequent date, probably in the 1 st century B. C., the suttas containing this special feature were compiled in the form of a text which has come down to us under the title ‘Itivuttaka’.
In the present collection of the Buddhist sacred texts. known as the Tipiṭaka, the Itivuttaka forms part of the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Sutta Pitaka. But, there is evidence that differences of opinion had existed earlier among various Schools about the place that should be attributed to the Itivuttaka. Thus, according to a statement in the Sumangala - Vilāsinī, the commentary to the Dīgha Nikāya, several texts such as the Jātaka, Niddesa, Paṭisambhidāmagga, the Sutta Nipāta, Dhammapada and Itivuttaka were compiled into a single text, known as the Khuddaka-gantha at the First Council. According to the Dīghabhāṇakas (Reciters of the Dīgha Nikāya), says the Commentary, this text formed part of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka while, according to the Majjhimabhāṇakas (Reciters of the Majjhima Nikāya) it was included in the Sutta Piṭaka.
In Sanskrit Buddhist texts, the Sanskrit equivalent of the Pali Itivuttaka is given as Itivṛttaka and the Sarvāstivādins regarded it as part of the Vinaya Piṭaka. They described it as a text containing stories of the previous births of some Arhats. There is also a Chinese version of the Itivuttaka, whose authorship is ascribed to Hiouen Tsang. This Chinese version is said to resemble closely the Pali text.
The Pāli Itivuttaka consists of four chapters, called Nipātas, and these are further sub-divided into sections, called Vaggas. The Nipātas, named First, Second, Third and Fourth respectively, are graded according to the number of topics contained in each Sutta of that Nipāta. Thus, the suttas of the first Nipāta each contains only a single topic, the suttas of the second have two and so on. The Vaggas do not, however, seem to follow any such order. The entire text consists of 112 suttas.
The introductory sentence of each sutta, already referred to, also needs some further elucidation. The Commentary to the text explains it to mean “It has been heard by me that this has been declared by the Blessed One, the Perfect ‘One.” The Commentary further goes on to say that the speaker mentioned is Ānanda, the Buddha’s constant companion for 25 years, who helped at the first Council by reciting to the assembly the discourses which he had heard from the Buddha. Thus, this statement is regarded as giving authority to the suttas, as containing the actual words spoken by the Buddha and repeated by Ānanda.
The Commentary, however, gives another version of the story. According to this version, the suttas were heard not by Ānanda but by Khujjuttarā, a lay woman, declared by the Buddha himself as being preeminent among women preachers of the Dhamma. It is said that Khujjuttarā, having heard these discourses of the Buddha, repeated them first to the women led by Sāmāvatī, in the court of Udena, king of Kosambi. The suttas then gained currency among the Buddha’s disciples in due course. Ānanda heard them and recited them at the First Council with his guarantee that they were the Buddha’s own words.
There exists a Commentary to the Itivuttaka, known as the Paramatthadīpanī, written by Dhammapāla of Badaratittha.
