PREFACE.

BEING requested by Hendrick De Silva Gunasekara, Deputy Coroner for the District of Negombo, to draw up a Treatise, to facilitate the learning of the Pâli Sandhi the union of words in the Mâgadhi Language, I, Nandârâma Tîsse Terunnansê of Yogiyâna, chief Incumbent of the Suvisuddhârâma Vihâra at Mukalangamuva, near Negombo, chief Pupil of Revata-Sthavira of Kirimætiyâna, and a Student of the Rev. Nâyaka (Principal) Priest-Professor Vimalasâra of Welitota, in the Southern Province,—have collated and compiled, duly and methodically, all that relates to the grammatical combination of compound words found in the Kaccâyana and Moggallâyana systems.

The late Pandit Mahâ-Mudaliyar, Louis De Soysa Wijayasêkara Jayatilaka, saw my manuscript and he most earnestly desired me and encouraged me in every way, to include in my opuscule, or to add to my collection of Sandhi-Rules &c., the Aphorisms, Explanations, Illustrations &c., contained in the Sadda Nîti; also, telling me, at the same time, the work would be, then exceedingly valuable—being full entire and complete on the Doctrine of Sandhi: and, that it would be of great use to European, American, Indian, and other students of the Holy Language. Not heeding time, trouble or expense, I got the very unintelligent and ever incorrect (in Ceylon) Rules &c., of the Sadda-Nîti rectified, and met the wishes of the respected Mudaliyar as will be seen from a perusal of my work. My Patron departed this life too soon to favour my brochure. It is not for me to say how far I have succeeded, or satisfied the Public; but, of this I can assure my readers, viz. I have not omitted any Sūtras Vrittîs or Examples; and, I think I may say that any Student having a knowledge of all that is contained in these pages will understand the combination of each and every Sandhi-word in the Sacred Texts.

The extracts from the Sadda-Nîti are correct, in my opinion, and they have been submitted for revision to more than one superior scholar Terunnânse in our Fraternity.

INTRODUCTION.

THERE are three Treatises (Systems) of Grammar, called the Kâttyâyana, the Maudgallyâyana, and the Shabda-Nîti, composed conformably to the Tri-Pitakas preached by the Omniscient, who has Himself attained to the farther shore of the ocean of Philology of Languages, adorned with many a Grammatical, Logical, Rhetorical, and Prosodical beauty. Amongst them, the System of Kâttyâyana has been drawn up by the Mahâ Thera, Kâttyâyana. It is accepted and studied by many a linguistic adept in many a country, from generation to generation, to acquire the significations in the Tri-Pitakas; and, it is received and regarded as the most original and very best expounder of the Original Language of all human beings occupying the same position as the Tri-Muni Grammar in the Samskrit Language. The author of it is supposed to be identical with the ever present and always attendant pupil-Priest Kâttyâyana of the All-wise-Buddha.

The Maudgallyâyana Grammar was composed prior to 700 years by the Great Thera Maudgallyâyana, who resided in the Sthûpârâma Vihâra at Anurâdha-pura. It is replete with rules, Illustrations etc., not found in the Kâttyâyana, and is an elaborate work highly lauded by all Savans and sage Grammarians of the Magadhi language. His learning has been thus sung by the learned of yore:— “Ya Shaktih Pâninau yâca,” “Chândra Kâttyâyanâdi sha;” “Seyammûrti matî-mannye,” “Maudgallyâyana rûpinî.”

And the System of Grammar taught in the Shebda-Nîti has been made 600 years ago by Agravamsâchârya Mahâ Swâmi of Arimardana-pura in Burmah (Sunâ paranta) in Jambu-dvîpa. He was a Buddhist Priest well-versed, as well in the Tri-Pitakas, as, in Mâgadhi philology; and, his Grammar is fuller and more comprehensive than either of the other two Treatises. As such, it, too, is very highly venerated by all learned in the literature of the Buddha’s language. The aphorisms or Grammatical rules in it, it may be said, embrace each and all and every anamoly or peculiarity of the Pali Texts and they run in unison with the holy words of our Lord Buddha. Our little brochure contains every one of the Shabda-Nîti aphorisms on Sandhis or compound words extracted in minute detail, as well as all the aphorisms found in the Kâttyâyana and the Maudgallyâyana Grammars; but, it will appear, on perusal that we follow all the Systems without leaning on or being partial to any one except for copiousness. Samhitâ Sutras in fact, in short, we have not spared any pains to collate, collect and bring to one place every statement relating to the Compound Words of Our Lord Buddha’s language as, at present extant in the holy Tri-Pitakas. And, what is Sandhi? It is the union or coalesion of letters, when there occurs nohiatus or (exsural). pause. And this little book is named Sandhi Dîpanî, as it treats of Sandhîs. Grammarians denominate the multitudinous Sandhîs of vowels and consonants in the words of the Tri-Pitaka in many and various ways. Kâttyâyana divides them into four kinds, as Svara-Sandhi (vowel unions) Pratishedha-Sandhi Byanjana-Sandhi (consonant-unions), and Niggahîta-Sandhi (mute n Sandhi)—* In the Padasâdhana and other works of the Mugalan System, they are treated as being of five classes; viz: Svara Pratishedha, Svara-Vyanjana, Vyanjana and Niggahîta. † And the Shabda-Nîti expounds them under three grand divisions; of which the first has three sub-divisions; Svara, Vyanjana and Vyâmisra: the second also has three; Svara, Vyanjana and Vritta: and, the third, four classes; viz: Svara, Niggahîta, Svara, Vyanjana and Sâdhârana. ‡

We, having collated and collected all the above aphorisms examples etc., have placed the Kâttyâyana rules first, next the Mugalan rules, and last, the rules given in the Shabda Nîti-Examples, also have been given, bearing on and illustrating the aphorisms; Extra-Explanations and contrarieties (apparent) are as Notes, and the Supplementary rules and variations are placed in their due and appropriate places. The letter (ක)—points out the Kachchâyana (මො)—the Mogallâyana, and (ස)—the Sabda-Nîti rules. And to facilitate reference to the particulars of the Sahmitâs, about 190 mottos or Headings are given at the commencement as contents. We hope that by publishing these according to our plân and arrangement, tyros in Mâgadhi Grammar will be largely assisted and benefitted, in acquiring a very exact and accurate knowledge of the compounding or uniting of words in the sacred literature of Buddhism. They will also be much at ease, as they are kept away from the exceedingly difficult and tedious task of turning and looking over thousands of pages of very repulsive and (to them) scarce and un-intelligible volumes.

And as the Shabda Nîti found in the Island is very full of clerical errors; and as there are no commentaries or any explanatory treatises on its System available here, may the learned reader indulge and forebear with the Compiler of these pages and may he correct any mistakes he may find in the extracts inserted from that voluminous record.
