සාරත්ථසමුච්චය නාමා චතුභාණවාරට්ඨකථා යනු සිංහලයන් ‘පිරුවානා පොත’ ලෙස හඳුන්වන චතුභාණවාරයට (පරිත්ත පොත) ලියවුණු පාලි අට්ඨකථාවයි. සරණගමන, දසසික්ඛාපද, සාමණෙරපඤ්හ, ද්වත්තිංසාකාර, පච්චවෙක්ඛණ, දසධම්මසුත්ත, මඞ්ගල, රතන, කරණීයමෙත්ත සූත්‍ර, ඛන්ධ, මොර, චන්ද, සූරිය, ධජග්ග, බොජ්ඣඞ්ග පිරිත්, ගිරිමානන්ද, ඉසිගිලි හා ආටානාටිය සූත්‍ර ආදිය මෙහි විෂය වන බව භූමිකාවේ දැක්වේ.

කර්තෘ ආනන්දවනරතන ස්ථවිරයන්ගේ ශිෂ්‍යයෙකි; ඔහුගේ නම නොදනී. අනොමදස්සි මහාසාමීන්ගේ ආරාධනයෙන් බුද්ධඝෝෂ හා ධම්මපාල ආචාර්යයන්ගේ අටුවාවල විසිරී තිබූ විවරණ එක් තැනකට රැස් කොට මෙය සම්පාදනය කළ බව භූමිකාවේ සඳහන් වේ. එස්. කේ. මූනසිංහ මහතාගේ Prefatory Note එකට අනුව මෙය සාමණේරයන් සඳහා සකස් කළ අත්පොතකි. පසු කලෙක සරණංකර සංඝරාජ හිමියන් චතුභාණවාරයට සිංහල ව්‍යාඛ්‍යානයක් ලියූ අතර, උඩුගම්පොල සුවණ්ණජෝති ධම්මකිත්ති හිමියන් අමතර සූත්‍රවල අටුවා ‘පරිසිට්ඨසඞ්ගහ’ ලෙස එක් කළහ.

පැරණි පුස්කොළ පොත් තුනක්, බුරුම හා සියම් අක්ෂර පොත් සසඳා පණ්ඩිත දොරනෑගොඩ ඤාණසේන හිමියන් (ගොරකපොල විද්‍යාරාජ පිරිවෙන) සංස්කරණය කළ අතර, කොදාගොඩ උපසේන මහා ථෙරයන් සෝදුපත් පරීක්ෂා කළහ. මෙය සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ අනුස්මරණ ග්‍රන්ථමාලාවේ 27 වන කාණ්ඩය ලෙස 1929 දී මුලින් පළ විය.

මෙම පිටපත සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරය විසින් 2010 දී (බු.ව. 2554) පළ කළ තුන්වන මුද්‍රණයයි (පිටපත් 500; දෙවන මුද්‍රණය 1992). මුද්‍රණය කොළඹ 10 S&S Printers (Pvt) Ltd. විසිනි. අගින් සංවණ්ණිත පද අනුක්කමණිකාව ඇතුළත් වේ.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94; had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With the Publication of Saratthasamuccaya or Catubhanavaratthakatha I have much pleasure in placing before the Public the 27th Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest Series. The editing of this Volume has been done by the ven’ble Doranegoda Pandita Ñanaséna Thero, Principal of the Vidyaraja Pirivena and member of the Tripitaka Publication Committee.

The proofs have been revised by the Ven’ble Kodagoda Upaséna Maha Thero, Adhikarana Nayaka of the Ramañña Sect, Principal, Sri Saddharmodaya Pirivena, Panadura.

This Commentary seems to be a handbook compiled from the existing Commentaries of Buddhaghosa and Dhammapala and adapted for use in this country by Pabbajjakulaputtas or novices. The author is a pupil of the Ven’ble Ananda Vanaratana Maha Thero of the Maha Vihara Parampara but his name is not known. A similar book is the Suttasangaha Commentary.
