මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ත්‍රිපිටක ග්‍රන්ථමාලාවේ (Simon Hewavitarane Bequest) XIV වන කාණ්ඩය ලෙස මුද්‍රණය කරන ලද ඛුද්දක නිකායට අයත් චූලනිද්දෙසට්ඨකථාව හෙවත් සද්ධම්මපජ්ජොතිකා නම් පාලි අටුවා ග්‍රන්ථයයි. මෙහි කතුවරයාණන් වන්නේ භදන්තාචරිය උපසේන මහාස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේය.

මෙම කෘතිය මුල්වරට සංස්කරණය කරන ලද්දේ විද්‍යෝදය පරිවේණාධිපති ධර්මකීර්ති ශ්‍රී දේවමිත්ත නාහිමියන්ගේ ශිෂ්‍ය නුගේගොඩ සුභද්‍රාරාම පරිවේණාධිපති බොරුග්ගමුවේ ශ්‍රී රේවත ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසිනි. එහි අවසාන ශෝධ්‍ය පත්‍ර පරීක්ෂාව විද්‍යෝදය පරිවේණාධිපති ත්‍රිපිටක වාගීශ්වරාචාර්ය මහගොඩ ශ්‍රී ඤාණිස්සර නාහිමියන් විසින් සිදු කර ඇත.

මෙහි සුත්තනිපාතයේ පාරායනවග්ගයට අයත් අජිත, තිස්සමෙත්තෙය්‍ය ආදී සූත්‍රයන්හි නිද්දේසයන්ට හා ඛග්ගවිසාණ සුත්ත නිද්දේසයට අදාළ අටුවා විවරණ අන්තර්ගත වේ. මෙම මුද්‍රණය සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරය මඟින් 2014 වසරේදී ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලද තුන්වන මුද්‍රණයයි.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With this issue of the Culla Niddesa I have much pleasure in bringing out the 13th Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest. The Editing of this work was done by Boruggamuwa Revata Thero, the Chief Disciple of the late Ven’ble Heyyantuduwe Devamitta Nayaka Thero, the Director of the Vidyodaya Parivena. Although in the Original the Maha Niddesa aud Culla Niddesa appear in one Volume the learned editor has for convenience brought it out in two Volumes. This arrangement I feel sure will make the edition more suitable for reference.

The thanks of the public are due to the devoted work of the learned Thero who is the head of the Tripitaka Publication Committee.

I have to record with great sorrow the death of Mahagoda Siri Nanissara Thero whose services in the final proof reading of the volumes were invaluable. The Buddhists of Ceylon have suffered the greatest loss through his death; he was not only a most lovable character but through his scholarship has done more than any other to disseminate the knowledge of the scriptures. “Anicca Vata Sankhara”.

Kahawe Siri Ratanasare Nayaka Thero has been appointed Principal of the Vidyodaya Parivena and will carry on the traditions of the Parivena. He has been appointed to pass the final proof sheets of the editions in the press.
