PUBLISHERS NOTE
The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.
His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.
We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.
May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.
WITH this issue of the Maha Niddesa Commentary I have the pleasure to bring out the tenth Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest. The editing of this work was done by Boruggamuve Revato Thero, the chief disciple of Heyyantuduve Devamitta Nayaka Thero, the Director of the Vidyodaya Pirivena, Maligakanda, Colombo. The final revision has been done by Mahagoda Nanissara Nayaka Thero, the learned Principal of the Pirivena. This Volume is a further proof of the high standard of Pali scholarship attained at this great Pirivena
The learned editor has been associated with the work of the Tripitaka publications from the beginning and is the head of the Committee entrusted with the supervision of the publications. At the end of the Culla Niddesa Commentary it is said, that the Niddesa Commentaries were written by Upasena Thero in the twenty-sixth year of the King Siriniwasa Sirisangabo at the Bhattisena Pirivena at Anuradhapura. The learned editor considers this king to be Aggabodhi I., who according to Wijesinha reigned from 564 to 598 A.C. As the name Siriniwasa Sirisangabo does not occur in the Mahavansa, the occurrence of the name in the Commentary will be of great value in historical research. The name Siriniwasa is, as is well known, applied to King Mahanama the son of Buddhadasa. There was a Baddha Senapati Pirivena at Polonnarua built in the time of Sena I. mentioned in Mahavansa chap. 50, verse 82, but this according to the learned Editor has no connection with the Bhattisena Pirivena mentioned in this Commentary. This Commentary known as the “Saddhamma Pajjotika” has gone out of use among students and copies are very difficult to obtain and this is the first time that the work has been printed. The learned editor draws attention in his preface to the difficulties that he had to encounter and in his modest way begs for the indulgence of the learned public. He deserves their thanks for the great service he has done in placing before the public a work which under other circumstances might have entirely disappeared. I am happy to be in a position to place before the public the tenth Volume so soon after the VIIIth Anniversary of the death of my brother and as his Trustee I beg to thank the learned Thero for the services that he has rendered in making the Tripitaka Publication a success.
