PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With the publication of the Seventh Part of the Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā [Mahānipāta], we have much pleasure in placing before the public the 41st Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest Series. This volume also has been edited by the Ven. Pandit Widurupola Piyatissa Maha Nayaka Thero of the Up-country Amarapura Sect, Bambarakele Vihara, Nuwara Eliya. We beg to convey to the Reverend Editor our heartfelt thanks for having edited this volume at great personal inconvenience during the course of a busy life.

The Tripitaka Mudrana Sabha was established in 1916 and the learned Maha Nayaka Thero started revising commentaries at the request of the Sabha. The Nettipakarana Aṭṭhakathā, a difficult work, was revised by him. He was then entrusted with the revision of the Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā and the Samyuttanikāya Aṭṭhakathā. While he was devoting his time to the former, the latter was completed by him in seven years and issued in three volumes.

The revision of the Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā was begun in 1923, and now, after seventeen years’ work the task has been completed with the issue of the Seventh Volume. We, as well as the Reverend Editor feel very happy that so great an undertaking has been completed in this period. The intense joy of the latter is vividly expressed in the following message which has been sent to us:- “The 60th anniversary of my birth dawned on 16th June 1939, and it is a great pleasure for me to find that in my 60th year I can finish the editing of the world’s largest and most tedious Pāli work”.

We have much pleasure to announce that the Dhammasanganippakarana Aṭṭhakathā and the second part of the Apadāna Aṭṭhakathā will be out during the course of next year. Further, we wish to mention here with the profound sorrow that the 27th anniversary of the death of Late Mr. Simon Hewavitarne, the benefactor of this Bequest Series, falls on the 17th January 1940.
