මෙය බුද්ධඝෝෂ මහාථෙරයන් වහන්සේට ආරෝපිත ජාතකට්ඨකථාවේ (ජාතක පාළියේ අටුවාව) ඡට්ඨම භාගයයි. පාළි පාඨය සිංහල අක්ෂරයෙන් මුද්‍රිතය. සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ දායාද ග්‍රන්ථ මාලාවේ (Simon Hewavitarne Bequest) 39 වන කාණ්ඩය ලෙස නිකුත් වූ මෙය සංශෝධනය කළේ නුවරඑළිය බඹරකැලේ විහාරවාසී පණ්ඩිත විදුරුපොල පියතිස්ස මහානායක ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ ය.

මුල් මුද්‍රණය 1937 (බු.ව. 2481) දී කොළඹ මාලිගාකන්ද ත්‍රිපිටක මුද්‍රණාලයෙහි මුද්‍රණය කර සිරිනාථ කුමාරදාස මුනසිංහ මහතා විසින් ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලදී. මෙම පිටපත 2009 දී සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරය විසින් කරන ලද නැවත මුද්‍රණයයි. Prefatory Note හි සඳහන් පරිදි මෙම භාගය චත්තාලීස නිපාතයෙන් ආරම්භ වී අසීති නිපාතයෙන් අවසන් වේ. ප්‍රකාශක සටහන (2009), 1937 Prefatory Note, සංකේත නිරූපණය, පාළි හෝඩිය සහ සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ මහතා, සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ මැතිනිය හා අනගාරික ධර්මපාලතුමා ගේ ඡායාරූප ද ඇතුළත් ය.

මෙහි චත්තාලීස, පඤ්ඤාස, සට්ඨි, සත්තති සහ අසීති නිපාතවල ජාතක 17 ක අට්ඨකථාව අඩංගු වේ. ඒ අතර කුස, සොණනන්ද, මහාහංස, කුණාල, මහාසුතසොම ආදී ජාතක ඇතුළත් ය.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher ,of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

WITH the publication of the sixth part of the Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā, beginning with the 40th Canto [Nipāta] and ending with 80th, I have much pleasure in placing before the public the 39th volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest Series. The editing of this volume has also been done by the Ven’ble Pandit Widurupola Piyatissa Mahā Nāyaka Thero of the Up-country Amarapura Sect, Bambarakele Vihare, N’Eliya. I beg to convey my heartfelt thanks to the Revd. Editor who edited this volume with great personal inconvenience having always a busy life.

I have much pleasure to announce that the seventh or the last part of the Jātaka Commentary, the Mahā Nipāta and second part of Pancappakaraṇa Aṭṭhakathā are well in hand and will be out during the course of next year. Further I wish to mention here with the profound sorrow that the 25th anniversary of the death of Late Mr. Simon Hewavitarne, the benefactor of this Bequest Series, falls on the 17th January 1938.
