ජාතකට්ඨකථා - දුතියො භාගො යනු ඛුද්දක නිකායට අයත් ජාතක පාලියට භදන්තාචරිය බුද්ධඝොෂ මහාථෙරයන්ට ආරෝපිත පාලි අට්ඨකථාවේ දෙවන කොටසයි. මෙහි දුකනිපාතවණ්ණනා සහ තිකනිපාතවණ්ණනා ඇතුළත් වන අතර, සිංහල අක්ෂරයෙන් මුද්‍රිත පාලි ග්‍රන්ථයකි. සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ප්‍රදාන (Simon Hewavitarne Bequest) මාලාවේ 24 වන කාණ්ඩය (Vol. XXIV, Part II) ලෙස ප්‍රකාශිතය.

මෙම කාණ්ඩය සංශෝධනය කර සංස්කරණය කළේ විදුරුපොල සිරිසුමඞ්ගලාරාමවාසී, උඩරට අමරපුර නිකායේ මහානායක විදුරුපොල පියතිස්ස මහාථෙරයන් විසිනි. සී. ඒ. හේවාවිතාරණ මහතා 1928 මැයි 25 දින ලියූ Prefatory Note හි, සම්පූර්ණ කෘතිය නිම වූ පසු සූචිය වෙනම කාණ්ඩයක් ලෙස නිකුත් කිරීමට අදහස් කරන බව සඳහන් වේ.

පොතේ දුකනිපාතයේ වර්ග දහයක් (දළ්හවග්ග සිට සිඟාලවග්ග දක්වා) සහ තිකනිපාතයේ වර්ග පහක් (සඞ්කප්පවග්ග සිට කුම්භවග්ග දක්වා) යටතේ ජාතක කථා වර්ණනා ඇතුළත් වේ. දුකනිපාතය රාජොවාදජාතකයෙන් ආරම්භ වන අතර තිකනිපාතය කච්ඡපජාතකයෙන් අවසන් වේ.

මුල් සංස්කරණය ක්‍රි. ව. 1928 (බු. ව. 2472) දී චාර්ලස් අල්විස් හේවාවිතාරණ සහ සිරිනාථ කුමාරදාස මුනසිංහ යන භාරකරුවන් විසින් මාලිගාකන්දේ ත්‍රිපිටක මුද්‍රණාලයේ මුද්‍රණය කරවා ප්‍රකාශ කරන ලදී. මෙම පිටපත සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරය විසින් 2009 දී නැවත මුද්‍රණය කරන ලද්දකි.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With the publication of the Second Part of the Jātaka Aṭṭha Kathā I have much pleasure in placing before the public the 24th Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest Series. The editing of this Volume has been done by the Mahā Nāyaka Thero of the Up-Country Amarapura Sect the Ven’ble Widurupola Piyatissa.

I am intending with the consent of the learned Editor to issue the Index on completion of the work as a separate volume.

I beg to convey my heartfelt thanks to the Reverend Editor.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.
