PREFACE. ABHIDHAMMATTHA SANGAHA. ABHIDHAMMATTHA SANGAHA.
The very profound Abhidhamma was preached by the god of gods (Sakya Muni) the most excellent Omniscient One, in the Tàvatimsa Heaven. It consists of seven books called Dhamma Sangani, Vibhanga, Dhâtukathâ, Puggala Pannati, Kathâvatthu, Yamaka and Patthâna, these treat mainly of four; namely Chitta (the mind), Chaitasika (mental perception), Rúpa (Physical elements or attributes of the individual) and Nirvâna.
It is indispensably necessary that this Dhamma should be studied by those who wish to acquire a thorough knowledge of Buddhism; neverthless, the study of these seven books is an arduous task. In consequence thereof, about seven or eight hundred years ago, The Venerable Lord Anuruddha, the great Thera, who was residing at Múla Soma Vihara, who was learned in the Three Pitakas, as well as in all the sciences, being solicited by a devotee named Namba to compose a suitable epitome of the Abhidhamma, comprising the seven books already mentioned, for facilitating its study, summarising the sense of the Abhidhamma contained in the seven books begining with Dhamma Sangani, composed this work in nine chapters, for the benefit of all, so that the principal teachings touching Chitta, Chaitasika, Rupa and Nirvana may be well and easily understood.
This is a very useful and invaluable work to our good Buddhists who wish to acquire a knowledge of Abhidhamma, and to others who are desirous of learning Buddhism as well as Tarka (dialectics). I, H. DEWAMITTA Thera of Subhadrarama, Vice Principal of the Vidyodaya Pirivena at Maligakanda, Colombo, have, at the request of Mr. B. C. Kure, corrected it by removing its clerical errors after collating the text with the Paraphrase and the Tikâ, as well as the Siamese and Burmese copies, and presented it to the said Mr. B. C. Kure, to print it. And I here take the opportunity of thankfully acknowledging the advice received from my Tutors the Venerable Sri SUMANGALA, High Priest, the Principal of the Vidyodaya Pirivena and the Pandit D. A. DESILVA BATUWANTUDAWE.
