මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය ඛුද්දකනිකායට අයත් ජාතක පාලියෙහි අටුවාව වන ජාතකට්ඨකථාවේ පළමුවන භාගයයි (එකකනිපාත වණ්ණනාව). මෙහි අපදාන නිදානය සහ එකක නිපාතයට අයත් ජාතක කථා විස්තරාත්මකව අර්ථ වර්ණනා කර ඇත.

සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ධර්ම පුස්තක මාලාවේ (Simon Hewavitarne Bequest) 20 වන වෙළුම ලෙස මුද්‍රිත මෙම කෘතිය, උඩරට අමරපුර නිකායේ මහානායක ධුරන්ධර අතිපූජ්‍ය විදුරුපොල පියතිස්ස මහානායක ස්වාමීන්ද්‍රයන් වහන්සේ විසින් සංශෝධනය කරන ලද්දකි. ෆවුස්බෝල් (Fausbøll) සංස්කරණය මෙන්ම සියම් රාජකීය සංස්කරණය ද පරිශීලනය කරමින් මෙම සංශෝධන කටයුතු සිදු කර ඇත.

ප්‍රථම වරට බු.ව. 2470 (ක්‍රි.ව. 1926) දී පළ වූ මෙම ග්‍රන්ථයේ තෙවන මුද්‍රණය ලෙස 2007 වර්ෂයේදී සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරකාර මණ්ඩලය මගින් නැවත මුද්‍රණය කරවා ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කර ඇත.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARNE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his deth. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer radily available.

His widow Mrs’ SOMAWATI HEWAVITARNE who passed away on 10th january 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWTl HEWAVITARNE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and beqeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarne Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undetaken this task to help both the student and techer of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Nobel Teachings of the Blessd One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thouands of yeas.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarne and Somawati Hewavitarne Maha Upasikawa in Sanasara and towards their final attanment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With this issue of the 1st part of the Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā I have much pleasure in placing before the public the 20th volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest.

The editing of these commentaries has been entrusted to Widurupola Piyatissa Mahānāyaka Thero, the head of the Amarapura Sect of the Kandyan districts. The Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā has not been printed in its entirety in Ceylon; an edition in Sinhalese character of the Commentaries edited by Aruggoda Seelananda Thero, the vice principal of the Parama Dhamma Chetiya Pirivana has been issued up to the end of the third Nipāta consisting of the first 321 Jātakas.

Professor Fausboll’s editio princeps has been consulted in the preparation of this edition. The learned editor remarks that in many instances in that edition the correct reading has been shown in the footnotes.

Recently in 1924 a complete edition of the Jātaka Commentary has been issued in Siam in Siamese characters through the generosity of a princess of the Siamese Royal Family Swanga Waddhanā Parama Raja Devi. This edition too has been compared with the present edition and important differences referred to in the foot-notes.

The learned Maha Thero hopes to complete the Jātakas in 6 or 7 volumes. The second part consisting of the Duka and Tika Nipāta is well in hand and will I hope be ready next year. In the preface written by the Maha Thero he refers to these different matters.
