PREFACE.

It is a great drawback to the learning of the Sinhalese language that there is not in our Schools an abridged Grammar, wherewith to learn the Grammar of the language sufficiently in a short time.

It would appear that there are many usages in the language current from very ancient times, not noticed in any of the Grammars hitherto published. It is indispensable that these should be included in works on grammar. The present language is also very different from the ancient; and therefore it is necessary that these differences should also find a place in the grammar of the language.

A Sinhalese boy generally leaves an English school when he is about eighteen years of age. At the time he is looking for an employment after leaving school, he will find it difficult to learn the Sinhalese Grammar in a short time from any of the existing works on Grammar, either on account of their abstruseness or conciseness. Hence, he abandons the idea of studying the Sinhalese Grammar, and enter into some employment. Thus the knowledge of Sinhalese of most of those in Government employments dwindles down to a low standard, in order to supply the wants thus felt, having at the same time, consulted the views of others also on the subject, the present work is compiled.

Were this book taught in Schools a knowledge of the Grammar of the language would be attained by pupils in a very short time. Moreover, the work is written in simple language, to enable those who have studied the English language to acquire the grammar of the Sinhalese language without the assistance of a teacher.

At the time of going to press the proof sheets of this work passed the hands of my tutor, the Venerable H. Sumangala High Priest, and Mr W, P. Ranesinghe, Proctor of the Supreme Court, who having expressed their satisfaction with the work, it carries the weight of their approbation.

I have to thank Messrs, Richard de Silva and Block Inspectors of Schools, and Mr. Alpheus Perera, School Master, for kind suggestions made to me to make the work suitable to Vernacular Schools. My thanks are also due to Mr. J. Samaradiwakara of Pelahela, himself a lover of Oriental learning, for it was at his kind request and encouragement that this work was undertaken by me.

Sinhalese Pandits having considered Pali and Sanskrit as preeminent languages, taught both religion and science through these languages. A knowledge of the grammar of any one of these helps to a knowledge of Sinhalese grammar, Hence, perhaps, is that they have not written any large works on Sinhalese grammar, the sinhalese grammarian has to depend a great deal on the Sanskrit and Pali grammars. What a stumbling block it is to the advancement of Sinhalese scholarship to make the knowledge of the grammar of their language subservient to a knowledge of the grammars of other languages! On examining the present work, it would appear to the student how much he is relieved from this dependence. I am now engaged in writing a larger work on grammar, and should that work be satisfactorily completed, I hope the Sinhalese student will be completely emancipated from this servile position.

The following letters have been received by me from L. C. Wijesinha, Esquire, Mudaliyar, and others who are competent judges of such a work as this.

(From L. C. WIJESINHA Esq., Mudaliyar, Translator of the “Mahavansa”) Matale, January 12, 1886. MY DEAR SIR, I have read through your new Sinhalese Grammar, the “Padaniti” with great pleasure. I thoroughly approve the system adopted therein, and consider your work eminently calculated to simplify and facilitate the study of the Sinhalese language. I think it ought to be made a text-book in every Anglo-Vernacular School in South Ceylon, and I hope the Government will do so. Yours very truly, (Signed) L. Corneille Wijesinha. Weragama Bandara Esq., Editor “Sandaresa.”

(From W. GUNATILAKA Esq., Proctor, Editor of the “Orientalist”) Kandy, 23rd January, 1888. MY DEAR SIR, Your Sinhalese Grammar the “Padanitiya” which I have read over with great interest, will supply a want that has been long felt in the Island, especially by the Sinhalese people, I entirely approve of its plan and design, and I must say that you deserve eminently the thanks of your countrymen for giving them so excellent and at the same time so easy a Grammar of their language. Yours sincerely, (Signed) W. Goonetilaka.

(From BARTHOLOMEUS GUNASEKARA Esq. Mudaliyar, Translator, Colonial Secretary’s Office.) I would strongly recommend this Grammar for the Study of those who are anxious to acquire a critical knowledge of the Sinhalese Classes. The author deserves great credit for his careful attention to the niceties of the language with a view to make his work really useful to the public. He has illustrated his rules by a variety of familiar examples, and conveyed his ideas with precision and elegance. The Grammar, though apparently based on the “Sidat Sungarawa” —which as its name signifies, is only a “digest of demonstrated truths” —is not a servile imitation of that work. He differs from the author of the “Sidat Sangarawa” in stating that Sinhalese nouns admit of three Genders, which is in conformity with usage in Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Pali and other learned languages. I would invite special attention to the chapters on Declensions, Conjugations and Syntax, which are more comprehensive and more intelligible than those we find in the “Sidat Sangarawa.” (Signed) B. Gunasekara, Mudaliyar.

(From HENRY PERERA Esq., late Head Master of the Native Normal Instruction.) Kollupitiya, January 30, 1888 DEAR SIR, Your Sinhalese grammar, the Padanitiya, has been read over by me with much pleasure, and I think the plan adopted by you in its compilation is such that it will facilitate the study of our language within a short time. For an acquisition of a complete knowledge of Sinhalese grammar within a short time, the want of a suitable work has long been felt, and that want, I think, is supplied by your work. It contains much useful matter that has not been touched upon by other Sinhalese grammarians, and I am much pleased to find that it also contains a division of nouns into three genders, Masculine, Feminine, and Neuter, so as to suit the ancient as well as modern Sinhalese prose works. Your work will eminently suit as a text-book for the use of Government Schools, and, should it be so adopted, I hope your efforts in the compilation of the book would be duly rewarded. Great credit is due to you for publishing a work so useful, and as it consists of almost all useful and important rules to suit the modern language. I may venture to think that for those who desire to study Sinhalese, your work will be more useful than any other Sinhalese grammar yet published. I am, Yours sincerely, (Signed) H Perera.

(From SIMON DE SILVA Esq., Mudaliyar, Translator of the Department of Public Instruction.) Colombo, 6th February, 1888. DEAR SIR, I read your Sinhalese Grammar, the Padanitiya, with great interest, and it gives me much pleasure to bear testimony to its value and usefulness, The work is simple and exhaustive, and is well adapted to the requirements of the Sinhalese students of the present day. Yours truly, (Signed) Simon De Silva, Mudaliyar.

(From EDMUND R, GUNARATNA Esq. Atapattu Mudaliyar and Mudaliyar of the Governor’s Gate, Galle.) Galle, 15th January, 1888, MY DEAR WERAGAMA, I have read with great interest the “Padanitiya,” the Sinhalese Grammar that you have compiled. It will, I anticipate, satisfy a much felt want of a really intelligible Sinhalese Grammar for beginners, and I expect that it will be widely used in the Vernacular schools, and that your name as its author will be long perpetuated, With best wishes Believe me, Yours sincerely, (Signed) E. R. Gooneratne,

From T, B, PANABOKKE Esq,, Ratemahatmaya, Gampola,) Elpitiya Walawwa, 16th January, 1838. DEAR SIR, I have read your little treatise on grammar with great pleasure, It is just the kind of work for present day. You have touched upon a great many points of recent origin. I may assure you that your work is much superior to any of the kind recently attempted which have come under my notice. It ought therefore to commend itself to all teachers and students who wish to have a Sinhalese grammar clothed in modern language, Yours very truly, (Signed) T, B, Panabokke,
