මධුරත්ථවිලාසිනී නාම බුද්ධවංසට්ඨකථා යනු ඛුද්දක නිකායට අයත් බුද්ධවංස පාලි ග්‍රන්ථය සඳහා භදන්තාචරිය බුද්ධදත්ත මහා ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් රචිත පාලි අට්ඨකථාවයි. සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ධර්ම පුස්තක මාලාවේ 12 වන වෙළුම (Vol. XII) ලෙස මෙම කෘතිය සංස්කරණය කොට මුද්‍රණය කර ඇත.

මෙම අට්ඨකථාව ගෝනගල සුධර්මාකර පිරිවෙනාධිපති ශ්‍රී භාරතීශ්වරාචාර්ය පණ්ඩිත යාගිරල පඤ්ඤානන්ද හිමියන් විසින් සංස්කරණය කරන ලද අතර, විද්‍යෝදය පරිවේණාධිපති ත්‍රිපිටකවාගීශ්වරාචාර්ය කොළඹ නවකෝරළේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝනායක මහගොඩ සිරි ඤාණිස්සර නාහිමියන් විසින් අවසාන ශෝධනය සිදු කරන ලදී. මෙහි ප්‍රථම මුද්‍රණය බු.ව. 2465 (ක්‍රි.ව. 1922) දී ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලද අතර, මෙම ප්‍රතිමුද්‍රණය ක්‍රි.ව. 2013 දී සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරකාර අරමුදල මඟින් එස් ඇන්ඩ් එස් ප්‍රින්ටර්ස් ආයතනයෙන් මුද්‍රණය කරවා ඇත.

දකුණු ඉන්දියාවේ කාවීරපට්ටන නගරයේ වැඩවසමින් බුද්ධදත්ත හිමියන් විසින් සම්පාදිත මෙම අට්ඨකථාවෙහි බුද්ධවංශ පාළියේ එන පද විවරණ හා ඓතිහාසික විස්තර මනාව අන්තර්ගත වේ. පොත අවසානයේ අකාරාදි වචන සූචියක් (අනුක්කමණිකා) ද අඩංගු කර ඇත.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With this issue of the Madhuràrtha Vilasini or the Buddha Vansa Commentary I have much pleasure in placing before the public the XII th Volume of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest. This work is edited by Yagirala Paññananda Thero the Principal of Sudharmakara Pirivene of Gonagala, an institution closely associated with the late Ven’ble Hikkaduve Sri Sumangala Thero, by whom was founded the Vidyodaya Pirivena and whose pupil the learned editor was.

The author of this Commentary was Buddhadatta whose native place is described as Uragapura in the Soli Country of South India. The present designation is Nagpur in the Tinnevally district. After studying the vedas, he joined the Mahavihara fraternity at Anuradapura and composed this Commentary. He was the author besides of Abhidharmàvatàra and the Vinaya Viniscaya. This Commentary was composed by him when he was living at a Vihare at Kaviripatnam near the mouth of the river Cauvery. Though this Commentary might well be called Madhuràrtha-prakàsiní, the learned editor has adopted the title Madurartha Vilàsini according to the general acceptance of the learned. Existing so long in manuscript, this work is printed for the first time in Sinhalese character. The learned editor deserves the highest thanks for the great trouble he has taken in editing this work.

He specially mentions the two manuscripts placed at his disposal from the Dambavinne Vihare by the Pradhananayake of Uva Sri Sanghapala Mangala Saranankara Thero, and by Karannagoda Gunaratana Thero the Principal of Sri Punyarama Pirivena. He derived great benefit from a part of a Burmese copy compiled by Sumanasara Thero of Hikkaduve. The final proofs were passed by Mahagoda Sri Náneswara Thero the learned Principal of the Vidyodaya Pirivena of which the learned editor is an old pupil.

Buddhadatta Thero lived in the reign of Mahanama and was thus a contemporary of Buddhagosha. Mahanama reigned in Ceylon between 410 and 432 of the Christian era. Though the date of Buddhadatta is not specifically mentioned in any book, it is generally accepted that he lived in the reign of Mahanama. There is no mention of any other by the name of Buddhadatta in the Sinhalese Chronicles.

I beg to place on record my debt of gratitude to the learned Thero, who is recognised in Ceylon as one of the most able among the younger generation of the Sangha.

බුද්ධං විසුද්ධඤාණං තබ්භවනං සුධම්මතං සංඝං තං රතනත්තය මනඝං පණමෙ හත්ථා පසූතොහං.

අයමට්ඨකථා කිර හත්ථලිඛිත පොත්ථකවසෙන තාසු තාසු ආචරිය පරම්පරාසු පවත්තමානා සමානා නානාලෙඛකදොස විදූෂිතා අවචනත්තාලුසියමුපගතා වත්තීති. තථා සති සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ මහායසස්ස ධනබලයා සී. ඒ. හේවාවිතාරණ මහායසප්පමුඛාය තිපිටක මුද්දාපනසභාය තිපිටකමුද්දාපනස්ස ආරද්ධත්තා අයං චාට්ඨකථා සංසොධනීය අහොසි. ඉමිස්සා සංසොධනෙ නියුත්තෙනාහං කතිපයානි හත්ථලිඛිතපොත්ථාකානි සමොලොකිය මහතා පරිස්සමෙන අඤ්ඤඤ්ච බුද්ධචරිතප්පකාසකෙ ගන්ථෙ ආසෙවිය යථාබලං යථාමති සංසොධෙසිං. එතදත්ථං මයා පරියෙසිතෙසු පොත්ථකෙසු දඹවින්නෙ විහාරාධිපතිනො සිරි සංඝපාල මංගල සරණංකරාභිධානාස්ස පධානසංඝනායක ත්ථෙරපාදස්ස ච සිරි රෙවත ගුණරංස්‍යාභිධාන දුතිය නායකත්ථෙරස්ස ච සිරි පුඤ්ඤාරාමපරිවෙණාධිපතිනො කරන්නාගොඩ ගුණරතනත්ථෙරස්ස ච සකාසා ලද්ධපාළි පොත්ථකානි අමචලපයොජනානි අහෙසුං මම මිත්තෙන හික්කඩුවෙ සුමනසාරත්ථෙරෙන මරම්මපොත්ථකෙන සමං පරිකඩ්ඪිය ලිඛිතාය මධුරත්ථවිලාසිනියා මූලභාගං ලද්ධාන තතොපි යථාට්ඨානෙ පයොජනමගණ්හිං.

ඉත්ථං මයා යථාමති යථාබලං ඉමිස්සා සංසොධිතායං විජ්ජොදය විජ්ජාලයාධිපතිනා අසෙසදෙසපස්සට්ඨයසොමාලිනා සකසමයසමයාන්තරෙසු අප්පටිහත ඤාණිනා චරිරූපමඤ්ඤිනා ඤාණිස්සරාභිධාන යතිසංඝපතිනා ඔසානසුද්ධිපත්තමොලොකිතං තං මමාචචනපීතියා ච පරිස්සමලාසාය ච ගන්ථගාරවාය චාහොසී ති සාදරං සගාරවං මනසි ක්‍රියතෙ.

සුගතො සකරොපයානමොක්ඛං පරහීත්වාබිල සතත සතත විත්තො උපනම යදු මුනින්දු භාවං පරිදෙසෙසි විසුද්ධ බුද්ධවංසං.

තහි මත්ථ විභාග දස්සනත්ථං මුනි පුත්තෙනා සුත බුද්ධදත්ත නාමො මධුරත්ථවිලාසිනී සමාඛ්‍යං රචයිත්ථාව්ථ කටං කථානු රූපං.

ලිපිකාර පමාද ජෙහි දොසෙ භයධික ව්‍යාකුල කාලුසොපගා සා සන සම්පීතිතාඹරෙ සසී ව නහි පීණෙති විදූන මානසානි.

පිටකත්තයමුද්දාපනොප යුත්ත - සහයාරාධිතතො ථ සාදරෙහං ජිනසාසන සුද්ධිවුද්ධිමෙයි අකරිං සුද්ධිමහප්පතිත චිත්තො.

යසරසියුතො ගුණී ස විජ්ජො- දය විජ්ජාලය තල්ලපාධිසාමී යති සංඝපතිප්පසත්ථ ඤාණො චරිමං සුද්ධිමකා කිරෙත්ථ ධීමා.

යදි වෙත්ථ සියුං ගරිට්ඨදොසා මමවාචචනපමාද ජාවසිට්ඨා තදුළාරමනීසිනො පහාය ගහිතබ්බන්මතොපසෙවයන්තු.

සිරිමා ස සුමංගලාභිනෙතා වචනීසාචරියො නිපෙටකම්හි දයයා විනයී පිනෙව මඤ්ඤූ නමහං චඤ්චතරං සරෙ පසත්ථං.
