මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය ඛුද්දක නිකායට අයත් විමානවත්ථු පාලිය සඳහා භදන්තාචරිය ධම්මපාල මහාථෙරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් රචිත ‘පරමත්ථදීපනී’ නම් පාලි අට්ඨකථාවයි. විවිධ පින්කම්වල විපාක වශයෙන් දෙව්ලොව උපන් දෙවිවරුන්ගේ විමාන සහ සැපසම්පත් පිළිබඳ ප්‍රකාශිත විමානවත්ථු දේශනාවේ ගාථාවන්හි පදගත අර්ථ සහ ඓතිහාසික නිදාන කථා මෙම අටුවාවෙන් විස්තර කෙරේ.

සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ත්‍රිපිටක මුද්‍රණ මාලාවේ 17 වන වෙළුම (Vol. XVII) ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් වූ මෙහි සංස්කරණ කටයුතු මඩුගල්ලේ සිරි සිද්ධත්ථ නායක ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ සහ මොරොන්තුඩුවේ ධම්මානන්ද ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් සිදු කර ඇති අතර, අවසාන ශෝධනය මහගොඩ සිරි ඤාණිස්සර නායක ස්ථවිර සහ කහවේ සිරි සුමංගල රතනසාර නායක ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේලා විසින් සිදු කර තිබේ.

මෙහි පළමු මුද්‍රණය බු.ව. 2468 (ක්‍රි.ව. 1925) දී එළිදැක්වුණු අතර, මෙම පිටපත සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරය (Somawati Hewavitarane Trust) මගින් බු.ව. 2556 (ක්‍රි.ව. 2012) දී සිදු කරන ලද යළි මුද්‍රණයකි.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

I have much pleasure in placing before the learned Public Vimāna Vatthu Aṭṭhakathā which is the commentary to the Vimāna Vatthu. The printing of this volume was started as early as 1920, but owing to different circumstances its publication has been long delayed. The work was entrusted at first to Madugalle Sri Siddhartha Nayaka Thero, Principal of Sangaraja Pirivena, Kandy. Since 1920 Morontuduve Dhammananda Thero, one of the Teachers of the Vidyodaya College and a member of the Tripitaka Publication Committee has been collaborating with him and the work is published under their joint names.

Though this is the first Edition in Pali Printed in Ceylon, there is a Sinhalese work known as the Vimāna Vatthu Prakarananaya, printed in 1902, by Telwatte Mahanaga Silananda Thero. This was originally translated into Sinhalese in the time of Kirti Sri Rajasinha the King of Kandy about 170 years ago by Gaimmulle Ratanapala Thero a pupil of the great Reformer Welīwita Pindapathika Saranankara, Sangaraja who was the Head of the religion or Sangaraja of the time. The King was so pleased that he dedicated to the said Thero the villages of Hingula and Alutnuwera in the Kandyan district.

The Pali Commentary was translated by Dhammapala Thero at the time he was living at Dimbulagala Vihare.

The last conference of the Bhikkhus responsible for the Tripitaka Publications met at “Taxila” the residence of Mrs. Simon Hewavitarne on the 17th January, 1925 the 12th Anniversary of my late Brother’s death. It was decided on this occasion to take in hand the commentaries to the Vinaya Pitaka and Abhidhamma Pitaka. The printing of the Commentary to the Vinaya Pitaka is well in hand. The works in hand nearly completed are:—

2nd part of Sumangala Vilāsini. “ “ Manōratha Purani. Cariyā Pitaka Commentary. Apadāna. do Itivuttaka do 2nd part of Thera Gāthā.

The following works are fairly well in hand. Patisambhidā Magga Papanca Sudani. Jātaka Aṭṭhakathā. 2nd part of Sanyutta Nikāya.

Owing to its great demand I am publishing the 2nd impression of the Peta Vatthu Commentary.

The expenditure up to 31st Dec., 1924 is Rupees 78,145/15 and the receipts from the sale of books Rupees 31,380/81. Five hundred copies of each Volume have been distributed free to the Chief Vihares in Ceylon and Libraries in all parts of the world.

I have to express my thanks to the two learned editors.
