මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය අංගුත්තර නිකායේ සූත්‍ර දේශනාවන් විස්තර කෙරෙන අටුවා ග්‍රන්ථය වන භදන්තාචරිය බුද්ධඝෝස මහා තෙරුන් විසින් රචිත ‘මනොරථපූරණී’ නම් අංගුත්තරනිකායට්ඨකථාවේ ප්‍රථම භාගයයි. සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ධර්ම පුස්තක ප්‍රකාශන මාලාවේ (Simon Hewavitarne Bequest) 15 වන වෙළුම ලෙස මෙම කෘතිය පළ කර ඇත.

විද්‍යාලංකාර පරිවේණාධිපතිව වැඩවිසූ රත්මලානේ ශ්‍රී ධර්මාරාම නායක ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් මුලින් ශෝධනය ආරම්භ කළ අතර, උන්වහන්සේගේ අපවත්වීමෙන් අනතුරුව උන්වහන්සේගේ ශිෂ්‍යවර විද්‍යාලංකාර පරිවේණාධිපති ධම්මකිත්ති සිරි ධම්මානන්ද නායක ස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් පැරණි සිංහල හා බුරුම පුස්කොළ පොත් ආශ්‍රයෙන් සංශෝධනය කර මුද්‍රණය සඳහා සකස් කරන ලදී.

මෙම පළමු භාගය තික නිපාත වණ්ණනාව අවසානය තෙක් විස්තර අන්තර්ගත වන පරිදි සම්පාදනය කර ඇති අතර, ආචාර්ය චාල්ස් අල්විස් හේවාවිතාරණ සහ සිරිනාථ කුමාරදාස මුණසිංහ යන මහත්වරුන්ගේ භාරකාරත්වයෙන් යුතුව 1923 දී පිටකොටුවේ සරස්වතී ශාලාවේ පිහිටි ත්‍රිපිටක මුද්‍රණාලයේ මුද්‍රණය කරවා ඇත. මෙහි දැක්වෙන්නේ සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරකාර මණ්ඩලය මගින් 2007 වසරේදී සිදුකරන ලද ප්‍රතිමුද්‍රණයකි.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARNE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death, He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 Volumes After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARNE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94 had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARNE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarne and Somawati Hewavitarne Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With this issue of the Manoratha Purani I have much plea-sure in placing before the public the 15th Volume of the Simon Hewa vitarne Bequest. On the 17th January 1923 the 10th anni-versary of the death of Mr. Simon Hewavitarne a meeting of the Editor Theros was held at “Taksila” the residence of Mrs. Somavathie Hewavitarne the widow of the late Mr. Simon Hewavitarne and it was decided that as the commentaries to the Sutta Pitaka were nearing completion the task of editing the Vinaya Pitaka and Abhidhamma Pitaka commentaries should be begun. It was further decided to publish the Catu Bhanavara Atthakatha and the Sutta Sangha Atthakatha, two works which it was thought should be included among the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest.

The unpublished works have been allotted to the follow-ing Theros: Morontuduwe Dhammananda Thero-The Itivuttaka Atthakatha, Madugalle Siddhartha Nayaka Thero } Vimana Vatthu Atthakatha Morontuduve Dhammananda Thero } Kahave Sri Sumangala Ratanasara Nayaka Thero - Patisambhidha Atthakatha, Vidurupola Piyatissa Nayaka Thero - The Samyutta Atthakatha, “ “ The Jataka Atthakatha. Pinwatte Seelananda Nayaka Thero - The Apadana Atthakatha Ratmalane Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero - Papanca Sudani These are well in hand.

The 2nd part of the Digha Nikaya Atthakatha viz., the Sumangala Vilasini is nearly completed. As was previously men-tioned 1000 copies of each commentary were printed of which 500 were distributed free. The cost of printing up to 31st March 1922 is Rupees 59,928 and 53 cents and the income from the sale of books is Rupees 16,079 and cents 91 leaving a net expenditure of rupees 43,848 and cents 62.

The present work was begun by Sri Dharmakirti Sri Dhammarama Nayaka Thero but owing to his demise the ed-iting of the work was entrusted to his distinguished successor Ratmalane Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero.

The term Manoratha Purani or the wish fulfiller might ap-propriately mean as the learned editor thinks that this commen-tary saw the fulfilment of Buddhagosha’s desire of writing the Pali commentaries of Ceylon. The 2nd part of the Manoratha Purani is well in hand.

The thanks of the public are due to the learned Nayaka Thero for his labour of love. Since this note went to the Press the death has occurred of Pinwatte Seelananda Nayaka Thera which took place on the 29th May, 1923 at Pinwatte Saddharmakara Pirivena at Pinwatte. His death is a great loss to the Buddhist community and to Pali Scholarship. “Anicca Vata Sankhara.”
