මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය භදන්තාචරිය බුද්ධඝෝෂ මහාස්ථවිරයන් වහන්සේ විසින් සංයුක්ත නිකාය උදෙසා සම්පාදිත සාරත්‍ථප්පකාසිනී නම් අටුවාවේ ප්‍රථම භාගයයි. සයිමන් හේවාවිතාරණ ධර්ම පුස්තක මාලාවේ 16 වන වෙළුම (Vol. XVI / Vol. VIII) වශයෙන් මෙය ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කර ඇත.

මෙම ප්‍රථම භාගයෙන් සංයුක්ත නිකායේ සගාථ වර්ගයේ එන දෙවතා සංයුක්තය, දෙවපුත්ත සංයුක්තය, කොසල සංයුක්තය, මාර සංයුක්තය, භික්ඛුනී සංයුක්තය, බ්‍රහ්ම සංයුක්තය, බ්‍රාහ්මණ සංයුක්තය, වඞ්ගීස සංයුක්තය, වන සංයුක්තය, යක්ඛ සංයුක්තය සහ සක්ක සංයුක්තය යන සංයුක්ත එකොළහෙහි අටුවා විවරණ (සගාථවග්ගවණ්ණනා) සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ආවරණය වේ.

මෙම කෘතියේ සංස්කරණ කටයුතු මුලින් බෙලිගම ශ්‍රී රතනපාල නායක හිමි, බිහල්පොල ශ්‍රී දේවරක්ඛිත නායක හිමි (මහෝපාධ්‍යාය මාහිංගොඩ ශ්‍රී ඤාණිස්සර නායක හිමියන්ගේ පරිශීලනය සහිතව) සහ බෙන්තර ශ්‍රී සරණංකර නායක හිමි යන විද්වත් යතිවරයන් අතින් ආරම්භ වූ අතර, උඩරට අමරපුර මහා නිකායේ මහානායක පණ්ඩිත විදුරුපොල පියතිස්ස මහානායක ස්වාමීන්ද්‍රයන් වහන්සේ විසින් සාර්ථකව අවසන් කොට නිමවා ඇත. 1924 දී ප්‍රථම වරට මුද්‍රණය කරන ලද මෙය සෝමාවතී හේවාවිතාරණ භාරකාර මණ්ඩලය මගින් 2007 දී තෙවන වරට මුද්‍රණය කර ඇත.

PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARNE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death, He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 Volumes After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARNE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94 had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARNE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarne and Somawati Hewavitarne Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

We have much pleasure in placing before the public the first part of the commentary of Samyutta-Nikaya, the Sixteenth Volume of the Hewavitarne Tripitaka Publication.

Dr. C. A. Hewavitarane, one of the Trustees of the Publication Fund and executor of the estate of the late Mr. Simon Hewavitarane, happens to be away in England and was so during the last few month of the printing of this book, having been chosen a commissioner from Ceylon to the British Empire Exhibition, 1924 held at Wembley in London.

The Tripitaka Publication Committee orignally entrusted the editing of this book to the late Ven. Bedigama Sri Ratanapala, Nayaka Thero, Principal of the Maha-Manthinda Pirivena, Matara. It must be recorded with regret that he was able to prepare only a part of the book before his death. He was responsible for the revision and editing of this book to the end of Nidana-vaggavannana.

Then the Committee requested the Ven. Bihalpola Sri Devarakkhita, Nayaka Thero, Vice-Principal of Vidyodaya Pirivena, Maligakande, to undertake the work of revising and editing the remaining portion of the book. this Nayaka Thero was responsible for the first twelve forms of this publication, which were finally revised and approved by the Ven. M. Sri Nanissara, Nayaka Thero, principle of the Vidyodaya pirivana. But owing to the death of both these venerable and scholarly Nayaka Theras, during this period, another change was inevitable.

Accordingly the Committee requested the Ven. Bentara Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero, Principle of the Sailanthayathana Pirivana, Bentota, to edit the book; he was abel to revise and edit only four froms and then expressd his inability to proceed, owing to pressure of other work.

The Trustees finally entrusted the work to the Ven. Pandit Widurupola Piyatissa, Mahanayaka Thero, of the Up-Country Amarapura Nikaya, who prepared the remaining eighteen forms for publication within a period of nearly one year. Thus he is responsible for the latter part of this book, to the end of the Sagathaka-vagga-vannana.

This Nayaka Thero deserves the thanks of all for the ready and willing manner in which he has accomplished the difficult task of editing this book, while also having to be responsible, amidst his multifarious other duties, for the greatest work of this series-the revision and editing of the Jataka-Attha-Katha.

It is interesting to record in connection with the publication of this book that the Ven. Piyatissa, Mahanayaka Thero, had in his possession for reference during the preparation of this book, a very valuable gift of twenty seven volumes of the Siamese “Attha Katha” publication, recently sent by His Royal Highness the Prince Chandaburi of Siam, as a Dharma gift in memory of his late lamented Royal mother.

1. සිරීසනවදනසරෝරුහ- සම්භූතෙ! හොති! විජය චිරකාලං, හාරති! සොරභවම්බුධි- පතරණසරණෙ! සමත්තසත්තානං.

2. ආස්වාසපරියන්තං ජයතෙ භුවි බුද්ධඝොස යතිනාමං, සහිතඤ්ච විභජන්තො මුනයො යස්සානුභාවමභිමෙත.

3. තෙනෙව මහාමතිනා සංයුත්තානමවරස්ස සාරත්‍ථං, රචිතාසි පකාසයතා සාරත්‍ථප්පකාසිනී නාම.

14. ඵලකානමථ තෙසං ඔසානාලොකනං අකා මතිමා, විජ්ජොදයපරිවෙණා-ධිපො ච නෙතා යතිගණස්ස.

15. සිරිඤාණිස්සරථෙරො තිපිටකවිස්සාරධායවිස්සුතො, තෙචාප්‍යුභො යතීසා නචිරෙනාහො! දිවම්පයාතාස්සු.

16. අථ භීමතිත්‍ථනගරෙ සෙලන්තායතනවිස්සුතෙ මතිමා, පරිවෙණෙධිපහුතො නෙතා සද්ධස්ස තෙකසත්ථඤ්ඤූ.

17. සිරිසරණංකර ථෙරො අජ්ඣිට්ඨො සො යථාවුත්තං, පටිපොත්ථකමඤ්ඤෙහි සංසන්දෙත්වා විසොධෙන්තො.
