PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Maha Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their flnal attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE.

With the issue of this volume the second part of the Digha Nikaya Atthakatha, I have much pleasure in placing before the public the 19th of the series of the Simon Hewavitarne bequest.

The first part was edited by the Venerable Heyyantuduwe Siri Devamitta Nayaka Thero and published in 1918.

After his unexpected death in 1922 his distinguished pupil Boruggamuve Siri Revata Thero, the principal of the Subhadrā-rāma Parivena and head of the Tripitaka Publication Committee stepped into the breach and undertook the completion of the work. The learned editor is in every way qualified to do justice to the task he has undertaken and I am very thankful to him for the care and devotion he has shown in accomplishing it. I have also to express my grateful sentiments to the Principal of the Vidyodaya Pirivena the Venerable Kahave Siri Sumangala Ratanasāra, Pradhāna Nayaka of the Western Province for the help he has given to the learned editor.

It is a matter of great satisfaction to me to further realise the noble aim of my departed brother and to be able to place before the public this part of the Sumangala Vilāsini which has not been printed before in Ceylon.

This year sees the beginning of a Buddhist Missionary Campaign started in the West by the Venerable the Anagārika H. Dharmapāla, the Founder of the Maha-Bodhi Society, and it is my earnest prayer that those into whose hands this volume comes will extend to him a hand of help and sympathy in his effort to disseminate the loving Doctrine of the Lord Buddha.

The religious and literary revival in Ceylon, of which this series is but an outward manifestation is steadily growing apace, and both among the priesthood and the laity there is a greater desire for a critical examination of both Pāli and Sinhalese texts.

This has been the end aimed at in this series, and every effort has been made to achieve this end. The index at the end of this volume serves this as well as the first part of the Sumangala Vilāsini.

In conclusion I beg to express my grateful thanks to all the reverend Theros who have helped me in bringing out this much desired commentary.
